Where to begin....I spent a couple days out at Imperial Sand Dunes this weekend. Camp RZR had Glamis going off. Lots of food, vendors, and of course RZR's, and other side by sides. A good time was being had by all.
I thought I would speak on a few things that always seem to be asked about here, and since I got some good seat time this weekend, I thought it would be good to share my findings.
1. Paddles - I strapped on the Xtreme Tire Skat 10 Paddles Extreme's, 14x13x30's, and rough buff fronts, same size on Meathod 403's. This is a fast set up. I was able to hit 80 mph in the drags. RPM's touched 8,350, and settled in at 8,000. The Skat's did seem to skate a bit. Running in 4wd, I could run to the top of a bowl, blip the throttle, and easily whip the rear end around. I was a little uneasy at first but after a few runs, was able to predict what the car would do when carving through the dunes. I have driven a 1000(4) with STU's for comparison. The Skat's to me are much looser feeling in the sand when tossing the RZR around compared to the STU's. Once I got used to it, I liked it. They also get up to speed very quick, and float well. I would reccommend if you have the coin, and like tossing your RZR around.
2. Tune - I had the Alba Stage 2 Turbo tune in for the first time as well. The tune makes what was already a sprightly engine even more responsive. It's feels like the engine trys to break it's own neck to get the car going, and going fast. You can roll up a bowl with plenty of power in reserve. In the wrong hands, a Stage 2 could really hurt you if you are inexpereinced. It is taking the RZR, in my opinion, to it's outter limits. 175 h.p is getting up there considering the machines weight. As stated above, I could hit 80 in the flats at 8,000 RPM. That is fast for any RZR in the sand. I maintained 46 mph up Oldsmobile on consecutive runs. With sand show pricing of $350, it's the biggest bang for the buck, most noticable thing I have done to the RZR.
3. Clutch - I had the service bullitin done a few weeks ago. The clutch felt good, and being able to reach up to 8,350 tells me that the tune, paddles, and clutch are working in unison. I blew it out after 3 rides and very little dust was in the clutch. I think, thus far, that Polaris has come up with a pretty good fix with the new spider and slider upgrades. We'll see in the long run, but for now I like how it is performing.
4. Fan - I have the upgraded fan. It was able to keep temps at or below 210. I was hitting 235+before and shutting down. Still a little warmer than i would like, but way better than before. It also helps that the Alba tune turns the fan on at 180. The fan runs a lot, but it is somewhat effective in combatting the heat. Ultimate solution is TCP rad and intercooler.
5. Safety - With the aftermarket providing trick go fast parts, these machines are getting more and more capable. The power and performance is getting to levels that will allow you to really hurt yourself. Case in point, I hit a jump yesterday that put me about 7 feet higher in the air than I thought possible. Although it is impressive to watch, my back is crazy sore now. X-rays are negative ( I wanted to error on the side of caution), and things could have been a lot worse. But I learned that this machine in it's current form is more durable and capable than me. I never thought it possible to launch a RZR like this. In case you're wondering, I was stone sober, and did scout the launch before giving it a run. I've been riding the Gardons Well area for over 12 years, and still can't believe I skied it out like this. I'll be back, but with a better education of what is possible in these vary capable machines. Enjoy!
