Over voltage regulator

I had an ovr code on my 2017 xpt goi up to 18 volts. I took a voltage regulator off a buddies xpt and had it happen again. Now when I plug in both voltage regulators into his rzr they both show high voltage in his now too. I’m not sure where to start or what is causi my rzr to smoke voltage regulators. Hoping I can get some ideas.
